Fayette County Public Schools this year raised nearly $24,000 in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients campaign.
About two dozen schools participated in the national in-school fundraiser, which encourages students to collect spare change to help battle blood cancers. (Leukemia is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among children and young adults under age 20.)
Leading the way was Clays Mill Elementary with donations totaling $5,503.84. Maxwell Elementary was next with $2,602.69 and then Rosa Parks Elementary with $2,118.62.
If a school raises at least $350, the top class or club sponsor receives a $50 Papa John’s gift card or $50 reimbursement for a party of its choosing. Individual classes earn pennants if they raise $100, $200 or $300, and any school raising more than $799 receives Staples gift cards.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing educational and patient services.
