A group from Winburn Middle School brought home the "Outstanding Entry" award among Kentucky's junior-division contenders in the 2011 National History Day competition.

The project by Janet Guo, Ji-Hae Kim, Jasmine Liu, Samantha McGehee and Saikeerthi Naidu -- "Less is more, or is it?'' -- placed eighth overall in the group exhibit category. Their efforts had earned top honors in statewide competition this spring.

"This was a great accomplishment for their first NHD experience," social studies teacher Theresa Buczek said after the national showing in College Park, Md.

The 2011 contest theme was “Debate and Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures and Consequences.” In year-long projects, students analyzed the historical significance of their topics and then presented conclusions in dramatic performances, imaginative exhibits, multimedia documentaries, websites and research papers.

Junior and senior division winners and runners-up in each category at the state level advanced to the national contest June 12-16 at the University of Maryland.
