Elaine Lin of Beaumont Middle School was a repeat winner of the state MATHCOUNTS contest, and Kathleen Yang of Winburn Middle School was runner-up after finishing fourth the previous year.

Of the 28 teams competing March 25-26, Lexington Traditional Magnet School was second, followed by Beaumont and Winburn.

LTMS students Angeline He finished fifth and Will Walters was 10th among some 150 participants in Louisville.

The top four individuals (including Elaine and Kathleen) won full-tuition, four-year college scholarships to the University of Kentucky or the University of Louisville and expense-paid trips to the May 5-8 national MATHCOUNTS contest in Washington, D.C.

The MATHCOUNTS program aims to improve math skills among U.S. middle school students. They compete individually and as teams in written and fast-paced oral matches designed to stimulate their exposure to a wide range of mathematics. There are four types of competition, including quick-recall rounds with buzzers and problem-solving with pencil and paper.
