Winburn paces Region 15 in Governor’s Cup

Winburn Middle School finished just ahead of Lexington Traditional Magnet School in the 2011 Governor’s Cup regional competition, which wrapped up Feb. 5. Beaumont came in third in Region 15, which includes 18 schools.

The Governor’s Cup was founded in 1986 as a way to promote and recognize outstanding achievement. Kentucky’s premier academic competition, it consists of five written assessment exams, composition (on-demand writing), future problem-solving and quick recall (also known as quiz bowl).  

Region 15’s top results:
  • Math: 1st Elaine Lin, Beaumont; 2nd Kathleen Yang, Winburn; 3rd Eric Xiong, LTMS.
  • Science: T3rd Nathan Vranicar, Morton; T3rd Malvika Singhal, Winburn.
  • Social studies: 1st Daniel Ma, Winburn; 2nd Eric Xiong, LTMS; 3rd Sahil Nair, Beaumont.
  • Language arts: 1st Elaine Lin, Beaumont; 2nd Alice Li, LTMS; 3rd Sydney Smith, Winburn.
  • Arts & humanities: 2nd Kyra Seevers, Beaumont; 3rd Grace Goulson, LTMS.
  • Composition: 1st Sydney Smith, Winburn; T2nd Mariah Mowbray, Morton; T2nd Alice Li, LTMS.
  • Future problem-solving (team): 1st LTMS; 2nd Winburn; 3rd Morton.
  • Quick recall (team): 1st Winburn; 2nd LTMS; 3rd Beaumont.

In Governor’s Cup, the middle grades and high school divisions include a district, regional and state competition. In the elementary division, students take part in district and regional contests.

The middle school state finals are March 12-14.
