Winburn Middle School finished just ahead of Lexington Traditional Magnet School in the 2011 Governor’s Cup regional competition, which wrapped up Feb. 5. Beaumont came in third in Region 15, which includes 18 schools.

The Governor’s Cup was founded in 1986 as a way to promote and recognize outstanding achievement. Kentucky’s premier academic competition, it consists of five written assessment exams, composition (on-demand writing), future problem-solving and quick recall (also known as quiz bowl).  

Region 15’s top results:

• Math: 1^st Elaine Lin, Beaumont; 2^nd Kathleen Yang, Winburn; 3^rd Eric Xiong, LTMS.
• Science: T3^rd Nathan Vranicar, Morton; T3^rd Malvika Singhal, Winburn.
• Social studies: 1^st Daniel Ma, Winburn; 2^nd Eric Xiong, LTMS; 3^rd Sahil Nair, Beaumont.
• Language arts: 1^st Elaine Lin, Beaumont; 2^nd Alice Li, LTMS; 3^rd Sydney Smith, Winburn.
• Arts & humanities: 2^nd Kyra Seevers, Beaumont; 3^rd Grace Goulson, LTMS.
• Composition: 1^st Sydney Smith, Winburn; T2^nd Mariah Mowbray, Morton; T2^nd Alice Li, LTMS.
• Future problem-solving (team): 1^st LTMS; 2^nd Winburn; 3^rd Morton.
• Quick recall (team): 1^st Winburn; 2^nd LTMS; 3^rd Beaumont.

In Governor’s Cup, the middle grades and high school divisions include a district, regional and state competition. In the elementary division, students take part in district and regional contests.

The middle school state finals are March 12-14.
