Winburn, Lexington Traditional Magnet and Beaumont middle schools flew out of the gates in the 2011 Governor’s Cup, topping their respective fields in district-level competition that wrapped up Jan. 22.

The Governor’s Cup was founded in 1986 as a way to promote and reward outstanding academic achievement. It has since become Kentucky’s premier academic competition.

A Governor’s Cup contest consists of eight events: five written assessment exams, composition (on-demand writing), future problem-solving and quick recall (also known as quiz bowl).

Elementary students participate in district and regional contests. The middle grades and high school divisions include district, regional and state competition.
