Dunbar cruises early in Governor’s Cup

Paul Laurence Dunbar High School dominated its local field, and Henry Clay High finished a close second in the opening round of the 2011 Governor’s Cup, which concluded Jan. 29.
In District 44, Tates Creek High was third in a group that also included West Jessamine High, Lexington Christian Academy and East Jessamine High.
In District 43, Sayre School edged Henry Clay by one point. Lafayette was fourth, and Bryan Station was fifth. Lexington Catholic also competed in this group.
The Governor’s Cup was founded in 1986 as a way to promote and reward outstanding achievement. Kentucky’s premier academic competition, it consists of five written assessment exams, composition (on-demand writing), future problem-solving and quick recall (also known as quiz bowl).

In the elementary division of Governor’s Cup, students take part in a district and regional competition. The middle grades and high school divisions include a district, regional and state competition.
The high school regional contests are Feb. 15 and 19, and the state finals are March 12-14.
