Paul Laurence Dunbar was runner-up in the high school division of the 2011 Governor’s Cup, which is Kentucky’s premier academic competition. And on the middle school side, Winburn finished fourth in the March 12-14 state finals.

Dunbar was tops in the quick-recall competition.

Among individuals, first-place honors went to Greg Myers of Henry Clay (social studies), Victor Macrinici of Dunbar (language arts), Elaine Lin of Beaumont (math) and Alice Li of Lexington Traditional Magnet School (composition). Idrees Kahloon of Dunbar and Kathleen Yang of Winburn finished second in math in their respective fields.

The Governor’s Cup was founded in 1986 as a way to promote and recognize outstanding achievement. The competition consists of five written assessment exams, composition (on-demand writing), future problem-solving and quick recall (also known as quiz bowl).
