Meadowthorpe locks down region in Governor’s Cup

Meadowthorpe Elementary has captured its sixth consecutive regional championship in the 2011 Governor’s Cup. The Mustangs produced four individual winners and also took top honors in the quick-recall contest for the ninth straight year.
Kentucky’s premier academic competition, the Governor’s Cup was founded in 1986 as a way to promote and recognize outstanding achievement. The contest consists of five written assessment exams, composition (on-demand writing), future problem-solving and quick recall (also known as quiz bowl).
The middle grades and high school divisions include a district, regional and state competition. In the elementary division, students take part in a district and a regional contest.
Here are the top Fayette County Public Schools results from the elementary Region 20 contest, which wrapped up March 19:
Overall standings: first, Meadowthorpe; tied for fourth, Dixie Elementary Magnet; sixth, Clays Mill; seventh, Garden Springs; ninth, Maxwell. Also participating were Athens-Chilesburg, Ashland, Booker T. Washington, Julius Marks, Millcreek and Southern Elementary.
Math: first, John Felty, Dixie; tied for second, Cici Mao, Meadowthorpe; fifth, Zsombor Gal, Meadowthorpe.
Science: third, David Thomas, Garden Springs.
Social studies: first, Kevin Liao, Meadowthorpe; second, Karishma Srinivasan, Maxwell; third, John Felty, Dixie; fourth, Will Andrews, Meadowthorpe; tied for fifth, Gus Carlson, Meadowthorpe, and Enio Kuvliev, Maxwell.
Language arts: first, Hanmir Jeong, Meadowthorpe; third, David Ma, Meadowthorpe; fifth, Akhil Kesaraju, Meadowthorpe.
Arts & humanities: first, Zsombor Gal, Meadowthorpe; tied for fifth, Ryan Landry, Dixie, and Victor Arsenescu, Meadowthorpe.
Composition: first, Hanmir Jeong, Meadowthorpe; second, Hannah Wang, Meadowthorpe; fourth, Myana Carter, Dixie; fifth, Carrie Littleton, Garden Springs.
Future problem-solving (team): third, Meadowthorpe; fourth, Garden Springs.
Quick recall (team): first, Meadowthorpe; second, Clays Mill; fourth, Dixie.
Hume Sportsmanship Award: Athens-Chilesburg Elementary.
