Annual food drive sets record

This year's Kids Helping Kids turned out to be the largest food drive in the history of God's Pantry. 

The 16th annual drive, sponsored by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky, collected 114,932 pounds (worth an estimated $183,891). That's 25,400 pounds more than 2009's total.

More than 36,000 students in 49 schools participated. The top schools will receive awards Dec. 2 at the God's Pantry warehouse.

 

High schools

1st - Eastside Technical Center with 8,901 pounds, or 22 pounds per student

2nd – Southside Technical Center with 1,950 pounds, or 6 pounds per student

 

Middle schools

1st – Winburn with 10,809 pounds, or 20 pounds per student

2nd – Jessie M. Clark with 7,835 pounds, or 9 pounds per student

3rd – Southern with 3,088 pounds, or 4 pounds per student

Most improved – Edythe J Hayes with 1,488 pounds

 

Elementary schools

1st – Veterans Park with 18,133 pounds, or 27 pounds per student

2nd – Cassidy with 7,964 pounds, or 14 pounds per student

3rd – Meadowthorpe with 5,663 pounds, or 11 pounds per student

Most improved – Sandersville with 4,759 pounds

 

An estimated 3,000 households will benefit from the students’ donations.
