More than 600 students discovered how "Science Opens Doors to New Worlds" in the 27th annual Kentucky American Water/Fayette County Public Schools Science Fair.

"There's a whole host of careers and fields to pursue," said KAW's Susan Lancho. "We want to plant that seed."

Students from grades 4 through 12 filled the gym Feb. 12 at host Bryan Station High School, ready to explain their myriad projects to the pairs of judges.

Meanwhile, other science buffs checked out hands-on activities and interactive exhibits set up by dozens of community organizations and vendors in the hallways.

The science fair recognitions included KAW Water Awards and the Urban Environmental Awards.

Grade-level and category winners will move on to compete Feb. 19 in the Central Kentucky Regional Science and Engineering Fair. In addition, the mayor will recognize district winners March 17 at an LFUCG meeting.
