Henry Clay's debate team earns state title

Henry Clay’s debate team placed first in the Kentucky High School Speech League’s 2011 state tournament, bringing home their eighth championship trophy.
More than two dozen students contributed to the strong performance in the March 10-11 competition at Western Kentucky University. Leading the way were seniors Athie Livas as the winner in Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate for a second straight year, and Neha Ray and Helen Sauer as champions in Policy Debate.
Freshman Ben Swanson was runner-up in Lincoln-Douglas, and juniors Emma Guida and Mary Chesnut placed second in Policy Debate.
Juniors Taylor Beegle and Sam Yu were state runners-up in Public Forum Debate, followed by senior Seth Morgan and freshman Zach Grimmett in third place.
Sophomore Macy Early finished third in Congressional Debate, while sophomore Barrett Block and freshman Urvi Patwardhan advanced to the final chamber.
Several students earned Top Debate Speaker awards for their oration skills including Livas, Ray, Sauer, Swanson and Chelsea Wilcox.
In addition, Coach Ryan Ray was recognized for his efforts in guiding Henry Clay’s team.
