Edythe J. Hayes Middle School and Meadowthorpe Elementary prevailed in the 2011 Battle of the Books, a nationally recognized reading incentive program.

In a series of intra-district competitions, students are encouraged not only to read, but to read with dedicated attention to details. Each spring, the coaches select the next year’s titles, trying to appeal to a variety of interests and reading levels.

In the May 11 middle school finals at “It’s About Kids” Support Services, Bryan Station was runner-up, and Beaumont finished third. Cassidy placed second in the April 13 elementary showdown, followed by Athens-Chilesburg.
