Amy McVey, principal of Veterans Park Elementary, will receive the 2011 Excellence in Education award from Kentucky AdvancED, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement.

This honor goes to the one individual in each state who has demonstrated unparalleled leadership in promoting excellence through accreditation and school improvement initiatives. McVey will be recognized March 21 at the AdvancED international summit in Chicago.

Nominees may be teachers, administrators, board of education members or community members. Criteria include success in generating a common vision for higher expectations, a lasting impact on student learning, service as a role model and mentor for kids, and a record of contributing to policies that support and further AdvancED’s mission of preparing every student for success.

McVey currently is chairwoman of the AdvancED Southern Association of Colleges and Schools on Accreditation and School Improvement’s state council. She recently was elected to serve on the AdvancED accreditation commission, which oversees the accreditation process for more than 27,000 schools in the United States and throughout the world. She also has been nominated for the national Excellence in Education award.

A native of Mt. Sterling, McVey earned a degree in elementary education from Eastern Kentucky University, a master’s in elementary education from Georgetown College and a Rank I in administration from the University of Kentucky.

She has been principal at Veterans Park since 2004. Before that, she was principal at Dixie Elementary, PSA at Veterans Park and a teacher at both Veterans Park and Ashland elementary schools.
