Yuzhe “Brian” Fei, a rising senior at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, has had a perfect summer – at least on his college entrance exams. He earned the highest possible scores on both the ACT and the SAT.

“I was really excited,” he said after learning of the two home runs. “For a while, I couldn’t really believe I actually got it.”

Brian FeiBrian, who is active on his school’s academic team, scored well in his first attempts but decided to take another at-bat in June.

“I just wanted to see what I would get, what I would do,” he said, adding, “My parents wanted me to have both scores just in case.”

So after previously notching a 2350 and a 2300 on the SAT Reasoning Test, he topped out at 2400. And he followed up a 35 on his first ACT effort with the perfect 36.

“I thought the questions were harder on the ACT, but it was easier to get a perfect score on it. It seems you have a little more room for error,” he said.

At Dunbar, Brian is also involved with the Beta Club and Future Business Leaders of America. While he has not decided on a college, “For a major, I’m thinking some kind of engineering.”

The ACT consists of tests in English, mathematics, reading and science. Each is scored on a scale of 1-36; the student’s composite score is the average of the four tests.

The SAT Reasoning Test contains 800-point sections in math, critical reading and writing, with a maximum total score of 2400.
