District offers free sign language classes

Fayette County Public Schools is offering free sign language classes – beginner and intermediate level – for district employees, parents and other interested community members.

Each class will be limited to the first 30 people who register. Note: Participants must plan to attend all 10 sessions.

Family/community members:

The classes for students’ families and community members will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday nights: Oct. 1, 8, 22, 29; Nov. 5, 12, 19; and Dec. 3, 10, 17.  

The beginners, taught by Laura Marshall and Kelly Southgate, will convene in the annex cafeteria at It’s About Kids Support Services, 701 E. Main St. The intermediate group, led by Nicole Dolen and Michelle Gaines, will gather in the annex library.

Faculty/staff members:

The classes for FCPS faculty and staff will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Monday nights: Oct. 5, 12, 19, 26; Nov. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30; and Dec. 7.

The beginners, led by Tracey Francis and Terri May, will be in the annex cafeteria; however, this class is already full as of Sept. 21. The intermediate class, taught by Nicole Dolen and Jan DeTienne, will meet in the annex library. 

Note: If schools are closed, sign language classes will be cancelled as well.
