Kentucky American Water has awarded Ripple Effect Scholarships to five Central Kentucky high school seniors for their academic achievement and commitment to the environment.

The 2010 recipients include Mindy Hamilton of Lafayette High School, Jamie Shackelford of Lafayette High School and Arlene Wang of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. Each student receives a $500 scholarship.

In addition to performing at exemplary levels in the classroom, these award recipients demonstrated a commitment to environmental stewardship through activities such as initiating recycling programs at their schools, coordinating battery and cell phone collection efforts and leading outdoor beautification projects.

Kentucky American Water established the Ripple Effect Scholarship program in 2002. High school seniors in the company’s 10-county service area are eligible to apply. Since 2002, the company has awarded a total of $39,000 to 62 Central Kentucky students.
