Decorative art pieces by 46 students are on display at the Headley-Whitney Museum until Dec. 23. The temporary exhibition is called “Improbable Baubles: Fabulous Faux Bibelots by Fayette County Eighth-Graders.”
The exhibition caps the museum’s second annual Faux Bibelot Design Competition, which encourages attention to the decorative arts in the middle school art curriculum.
For the contest, students from the seven participating schools were charged with working in “non-precious” media. Bibelots originally were made of expensive material like gold, silver and diamonds; students’ faux versions more likely contain rhinestones and spray paint.
The three overall winners came from Jessie Clark Middle School:
-
1st place: Madison Brizendine, “Spring into Fall”
-
2nd place: Courtney Nichole James, “Silver Carousel”
-
3rd place: Rowan Schaefer, “Endurance”
(See pictures of these three art pieces.)
The top entry from each school was also recognized:
-
Michael Cook, The Learning Center at Linlee
-
Casey Dalager, SCAPA Bluegrass
-
Anna Freed, Edythe J. Hayes Middle School
-
Salvador Hernandez, Leestown Middle School
-
Taylor Hudson, Beaumont Middle School
-
Jared Robertson-Noel, Winburn Middle School
In addition, Thomas Kinsen from Hayes was honored by the museum’s Junior Board.
The Headley-Whitney Museum, which is on Old Frankfort Pike, hosted an opening reception Nov. 13. For more information, contact Sara Jones at (859) 255-6653, ext. 204, or education@headley-whitney.org.
