Lynette Mitchell, who is in her 14th year at Bryan Station Traditional Magnet School, has been named the state’s Outstanding Middle School Counselor.
She will be honored at an awards luncheon March 4 during the Kentucky School Counselor Association’s spring conference at the Marriott Griffin Gate Resort.
“It’s a real honor to feel that people value what I do,” said Mitchell, who was nominated by a former colleague from Richmond.
Mitchell has 24 years of experience in Fayette County Public Schools, including time teaching special education classes and life science at Winburn Middle School. She has been a counselor since joining Bryan Station Middle.
“My ability to form relationships with the kids and connect with them on a level to help them with whatever problem they’re having is probably my greatest asset,” she said. “And I love middle school. It’s that kind of quirky kid that I connect with.”
A native of Louisville, Mitchell earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Kentucky and a master of arts in education and Rank 1 from Eastern Kentucky University.
Her family includes husband Tony, daughter Page Schmiedeknecht, and stepchildren Jonny and Sarah Mitchell.
