Make-up days extend school into June

Counting this week's school closings for winter weather, students in the Fayette County Public Schools now have to make up six school days missed because of snowy conditions.  Days missed were Jan. 7 and 8, and Feb. 9, 10, 16 and 17.

The district had already announced that Feb. 12 and March 5 would become regular school days to make up for time lost. The original academic calendar called for students to be off on those Fridays, but designated them as “possible weather make-up days.”

The four additional make-up days now needed will be taken from the weather days originally designated at the end of the calendar. Students and staff are now expected to be in school on May 27, May 28, June 1 and June 2.

The original last day of school had been set for May 26, but at this time, students’ last day will now be June 2.

Other “possible weather make-up days” if needed include: June 3-4 and June 7-11. Any days beyond that would have to be approved by the Fayette County Board of Education.

Families with students graduating this spring should be aware that state law prohibits graduation ceremonies prior to the last day of the academic school year. Since the last day of school remains in question until the weather warms up, high school graduation ceremony dates and times will not be scheduled until all the winter make-up dates are settled.
