Lafayette High School’s marching band has wrapped up yet another state title, finishing first in Class 5A in the Kentucky championships in Louisville.

The band’s performance show, called “Metamorphosis,” was a character-driven piece that followed a girl through the process of rejection, self-discovery and acceptance.

Paul Laurence Dunbar High, which won state in 2007, came in fourth in the Nov. 7 finals.

These two Fayette County schools have dominated the Kentucky Music Educators Association's marching band contests since 1990.

Chuck Smith, in his 14th year as band director at Lafayette, will lead the Pride of the Bluegrass into the Bands of America Grand National Championships Nov. 11-14 in Indianapolis.

“That will wrap it up for us,” he said of the competition season for his 200-member band.
