Lafayette High School’s marching band has wrapped up yet another state title, finishing first in Class 5A in the Kentucky championships in Louisville.

The band’s performance show, called “Metamorphosis,” was a character-driven piece that followed a girl through the process of rejection, self-discovery and acceptance.

Paul Laurence Dunbar High, which won state in 2007, came in fourth in the Nov. 7 finals.

These two Fayette County schools have dominated the Kentucky Music Educators Association's marching band contests since 1990.   

Chuck Smith, in his 14^th year as band director at Lafayette, will lead the Pride of the Bluegrass into the Bands of America Grand National Championships Nov. 11-14 in Indianapolis.

“That will wrap it up for us,” he said of the competition season for his 200-member band.
