Students advance in National History Day contest

Students from around the Commonwealth traveled to Frankfort for the 2010 Kentucky Junior Historical Society conference, which included the Kentucky History Day state contest.
More than 40 schools and 425 students participated in the annual conference sponsored by the Kentucky Historical Society. Students who placed first and second in the junior and senior division in each category on the state level will compete in the National History Day contest June 13-17 in College Park, Md.
Top state results from Fayette County Public Schools:
Nia Johnson, Tates Creek High; first place, senior individual exhibit, “The Morgan Traffic Signal: Changing Directions”;
Huy Tran, Tates Creek High; first place, senior individual documentary, “Telescope: The Eye of the Universe”;
Aaron Weittenhiller, Winburn Middle; first place, junior paper, “The $5 Day”;
Elizabeth Minor, Winburn Middle; first place, junior Web site, “Waves for the Wars: Radio Broadcasting During Wartime”;
Ben Gardner and Andrew Tapia, Winburn Middle; first place, junior group documentary, “Space Exploration During the Space Age”;
Ben Swanson, Winburn Middle; second place, junior individual documentary, “The Guide Dog for the Blind”;
Jeremy Robison and Michael Sommer, Winburn Middle; second place, junior Web site, “The War Submarine”;
Allison Laski, Mackenzie Mirre and Erin Taylor, Beaumont Middle; second place, junior group documentary, “A Snapshot of the Past.”
Kentucky History Day is part of the National History Day program, which is an annual, year-long program that promotes the teaching and learning of history in America’s schools. Students analyze the historical significance of their topics and present conclusions in dramatic performances, imaginative exhibits, multimedia documentaries, Web sites and research papers.
The 2010 theme was “Innovation in History: Impact and Change.” Next year’s theme is “Debate and Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures and Consequences.”
