Three Fayette County Public Schools students earned top honors at the 2010 Kentucky History Day district contest at Eastern Kentucky University and will advance to the state competition May 8 in Frankfort.

  • Josiah Thomas Farley of Beaumont Middle School took first place in the junior paper category for “The Impact of Photography at Antietam on Society.”
  • Huy Tran of Tates Creek High School placed first in the senior individual documentary area for “Telescope: The Eye of the Universe.”
  • Nia Johnson, also from Tates Creek High, won in the senior individual exhibit for “The Morgan Traffic Signal: Changing Directions.”

Seven schools and more than 60 students participated in the District 5 contest March 20. The top three students in each category received a medal, while all top five finishers were recognized and move on to state.

KHD is part of the National History Day program, which is an annual, year-long program that promotes the teaching and learning of history in America’s schools. This year’s theme is “Innovation in History: Impact and Change.”

Students analyze the historical significance of their topics and present conclusions in dramatic performances, imaginative exhibits, multimedia documentaries, Web sites and research papers.

The program culminates with the national competition at the University of Maryland in June.
