Paul Laurence Dunbar High School has captured its fourth consecutive overall state title in the Governor’s Cup, which is Kentucky’s premier academic competition. Winburn was runner-up in the middle school division for the second year in a row, and Beaumont tied for 10th place.
In the individual contests, Winburn’s Valerie Sarge won top honors in math as Fayette County students swept the top four spots. Alice Li of Lexington Traditional Magnet School placed first in composition.
Dunbar’s quick-recall team (Idrees Kahloon, Victor Macrinici, Ping Chen, Brian Fei, Jay Li, Helen Fu, Ailin Shen, Orshi Hegyi and Matt Hensley) also finished ahead of the pack in the March 13-15 state finals. And the school’s Future Problem-Solving team (Jenny Pushkarskaya Arlene Wang, Nisha Mulay and Darshali Vyas) will represent Kentucky in international competition this summer.
The Governor’s Cup was founded in 1986 as a way to promote, reward and recognize outstanding achievement. The competition consists of five written assessment exams, composition (on-demand writing), future problem-solving and quick recall (also known as quiz bowl).
The 2010 event was the 25th anniversary edition of the Governor’s Cup. Here are the results from the state finals for students in Fayette County Public Schools.
