Winburn, Lexington Traditional Magnet School and Beaumont dominated their respective fields as area middle schools kicked off the 2010 Governor’s Cup with district-level competition Jan. 23.

The Governor’s Cup was founded in 1986 as a way to promote, reward and recognize outstanding academic achievement. It has since become Kentucky’s premier academic competition. Governor’s Cup consists of eight events: five written assessment exams, composition (on-demand writing), quick recall (also known as quiz bowl) and future problem-solving.

In the elementary division, students take part in a district and regional competition. The middle grades and high school divisions include a district, regional and state competition.
