Henry Clay, Dunbar best in first round of Governor’s Cup

Henry Clay and Paul Laurence Dunbar high schools finished atop their respective groups in the 2010 Governor’s Cup district-level competition, which wrapped up Feb. 4 after snow postponed the previous Saturday’s contests.
The Governor’s Cup was founded in 1986 as a way to promote, reward and recognize outstanding achievement. Kentucky’s premier academic competition, Governor's Cup consists of five written assessment exams, composition (on-demand writing), future problem-solving and quick recall (also known as quiz bowl).
In District 43 competition, Henry Clay was first, followed by Lafayette in fourth place and Bryan Station in fifth. This group also included Sayre School and Lexington Catholic.
In District 44, Paul Laurence Dunbar won going away, and Tates Creek High School came in third. This field also included West Jessamine High and East Jessamine High.

In the elementary division of Governor’s Cup, students take part in a district and regional competition. The middle grades and high school divisions include a district, regional and state competition.
The high school regional contests are Feb. 16 and 20, and the state finals are March 13-15.
