Nine schools receive aid for fruit, vegetable snacks

Students in 90 Kentucky elementary schools, including nine in Fayette County, will enjoy fresh produce this coming school year as part of the federal Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program.
The program, run by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, provides children with a variety of free fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the school day. It is an effective and creative way to introduce these foods as healthy snack options.
Selections were based on applications from elementary schools that operate the National School Lunch Program and that have 50 percent or more of their students eligible for free/reduced-price meals.
Kentucky received more than $1.8 million for the 2010-2011 school year, including:
- Arlington Elementary, $16,105.97
- Booker T. Washington (intermediate), $11,814.76
- Booker T. Washington (primary), $19,338.31
- Breckinridge Elementary, $29,091.06
- Cardinal Valley Elementary, $33,605.19
- Harrison Elementary, $23,740.98
- Mary Todd Elementary, $22,236.27
- Northern Elementary, $27,084.78
