Chess players capture statewide honors

A Meadowthorpe Elementary team earned first-place honors in the K-5 division of the state Scholastic Chess Championships. The team competition, held March 13 in Louisville, was sponsored by the Kentucky Chess Association.
The Meadowthorpe champs included Michael Li, Ethan Tan, David Ma and CJ Labianca. David and CJ also received trophies for perfect 4-0 records. In the K-5 alternates section, Gus Carlson placed first with a 4-0 record. Evan Clark was fifth in the K-3 alternates.
Among middle schools, SCAPA Bluegrass was runner-up in the K-8 division with the team of Taylor Bagley, Nathan Rayens, David Seder and Carson Crovo. Taylor also notched a 4-0 record. In the alternates section, Thomas Bollinger finished second, and Congrui Zhang was fifth.
Lexington Traditional Magnet School placed fifth in the K-8 division with Elliot Beach, Max Zhan, Kenny Xu and Rupal Shah.
Stonewall Elementary’s J.T. Sparks, Madeline DeJesus, Chase Whatley and Reece Johnson finished ninth in the K-3 division.
