Teran Sundy, a senior at Tates Creek High School, will be honored as Youth Achiever of the Year at this weekend’s 25th annual YMCA of Central Kentucky’s Black Achievers banquet.

Other Fayette County students receiving scholarships include Richard Carbuccia II, Andrew Coleman, Katherene Jackson, Morgan Jones and Jonathan Richardson of Bryan Station High School; Kimberlee Hunt of Lafayette High; Larnasia Brown and Kennye Smith of Paul Laurence Dunbar High; and Luther Dankwa of Tates Creek High School.

These students were chosen based on their Black Achievers’ senior packet score, number of years and attendance in the program, GPA and ACT scores.

The YMCA's Black Achievers is an educational and cultural enrichment program that prepares middle and high school students for college. It connects students with positive adult role models in the community and exposes them to career and social opportunities that are not readily available.

Participants have earned more than $9.4 million in scholarships in the past 24 years, and the program has mentored more than 7,700 students throughout Central Kentucky.

The awards banquet is April 17 at the Marriott Griffin Gate. Dr. Janet Taylor, a psychiatrist in New York City, will be the keynote speaker. Tickets are $75 and are available at the YMCA Center for Achievement (LexLinc building), 436 Georgetown St.
