Mini grants to fund innovation classroom efforts

Thirteen schools with creative ideas for learning have received a total of $9,200 from the Blue Grass Community Foundation, which provides mini grants for teachers who develop innovative, interesting classroom programs or projects.

The grant money enables teachers to buy special materials and resources that aren’t covered in school budgets.

The community foundation is helping fund these projects for the 2009-2010 academic year:

  • Ashland Elementary, outdoor classroom for science activities, $1,000
  • Breckinridge Elementary, after-school physical fitness program, $500
  • Dixie Elementary, Dulcimer Days with a visiting artist, $1,000
  • Edythe J. Hayes Middle, From Product to Profit entrepreneurship class, $300
  • Garden Springs Elementary, Divine Dulcimers and Dance rotation class, $500
  • Henry Clay High School, Equity in Advanced Placement program, $750
  • Lafayette High School, Global Classroom through foreign partner school correspondence, $1,000
  • Liberty Elementary, Hooray for Clay visual arts project, $900
  • Mary Todd Elementary, Appalachian Mountain Dulcimer Ensemble, $500
  • Millcreek Elementary, Music with Keyboards, $650
  • Northern Elementary, Tell Me a Story using a famous artist’s work to explore culture, self and others, $550
  • Tates Creek Elementary, physical fitness with Wii gaming software, $750
  • Winburn Middle School, Quest for Knowledge student training in cooperative learning strategies, $800
