Winburn, Bryan Station math-letes set pace on AMC 8

Winburn Middle School notched the highest team score in Kentucky on the annual AMC 8, a 25-question multiple-choice math exam designed to promote problem-solving skills. In addition, Winburn and Bryan Station Traditional Magnet School were the only ones in the state to make the School Honor Roll.

Among individuals, Winburn eighth-grader Valerie Sarge logged the only perfect score in Kentucky, and sixth-grader Kathleen Yang missed just one question.

Roughly 150,000 middle school students from dozens of countries take this American Mathematics Competitions exam each fall. Top scorers from Fayette County Public Schools on the Nov. 17 exam included:

From Beaumont Middle – Elaine Lin, Haani Husain, Alex Lucas and Robert Prince; coached by Vickie Nelson.

From Bryan Station Traditional Magnet School – Jacob Margolies, Nelson Ng, Tristan Basil, Keaton Butler; Onyx French, Ethan Girard and Michael Robinson; coached by Valerie Hairston and Sonia Fullwood.

From Lexington Traditional Magnet School – Henry Russell, Eric Xiong, Angeline He, Alec Baron, Hannah Cox, Xu Liu, Ryan Owens, William Walters, Max Zhan, Ryan Norton, Christine Brandewie, McKaylee Copher, Morgan Hopkins, Cody Leslie, Alice Li, Monisha Rekhraj, Michael Hall, Maxwell Hirschowitz, Taylore Jordan and Jordan Vaughn; coached by Keith Durham.

From Winburn Middle School – Valerie Sarge, Kathleen Yang, Matthew Wu, Angela Tseng, Lillian Xie, Ryan Blood, Iven Yang and Theodore Livas; coached by Betsy Rickenbacker.
