A Tates Creek team took first place Nov. 8 at High School Mathematics Day, hosted by the University of Kentucky.
Sophomore Michael Druggan, senior Nate Rice and freshman Alec Henthorne fared well with the 33 algebra and geometry questions, which were described as conceptually difficult. Tates Creek tied with Woodford County for total points and was awarded first place on a tie-breaker.
“Since Saturday, I have already been contacted by another university that has asked for our students’ participation on a regional math team that competes nationally,” said teacher Ryan McQuerry, who was there to support his students. “Go Creek!”
Druggan dominated the test, earning individual honors in the grades 9-10 boys' bracket. Lafayette High's Sonal Shah placed first in the grades 11-12 girls' competition. Druggan notched the top score overall in the four divisions.
The UK event was sponsored by the Department of Mathematics and the College of Engineering.
