Paul Laurence Dunbar High School is included in Newsweek magazine’s latest list of America’s Best High Schools. Out of 1,480 schools that qualified, Dunbar came in at No. 858.

Newsweek evaluates schools by dividing the number of students who took the Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or Cambridge tests by the number of graduating seniors. All public schools with a ratio of at least 1.000, meaning they had as many tests in 2008 as they had graduates, are put on the Newsweek list.

In all, 15 Kentucky high schools made the cut for 2009. The United States has more than 10,000 high schools.

Paul Laurence Dunbar’s rankings in previous Newsweek lists:

  • 2008: 759
  • 2007: 733
  • 2006: 957
  • 2005: 1,022
