Catherine Christian of Lafayette High School is among Kentucky’s seven winners in the 2009 National Achievement Scholarship competition. Christian, who listed her probable career field as music education, will receive a $2,500 award for undergraduate study.
The National Achievement Scholarship Program announced that roughly 800 outstanding black American high school seniors have won awards totaling $2.6 million. They were selected on the basis of their abilities, accomplishments and potential for academic success in college. The scholarships are financed by grants from more than 40 corporate organizations and professional associations, and by the National Merit Scholarship Corp.
Kentucky had 16 semifinalists this year, including Jeromy Height of Tates Creek High School.
