Kids entering sixth grade this fall have a chance to explore their new schools at orientation sessions designed for students and parents.

Teachers will be on hand to introduce themselves, along with representatives of the PTA and the YMCA, which provides after-school programs.

Students also can learn more about extracurricular activities like band and sports teams.

“It gives them an overview of what sixth grade looks like,” said Jane Dreidame, principal at Southern Middle School. And for first-time parents of middle schoolers, the sessions are “very reassuring.”
