Paced by Winburn Middle School, 30 students from Fayette County Public Schools will compete in the National History Day state contest April 18 at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History in Frankfort.

These kids won 1st, 2nd or 3rd place in the District 6 regional contests at Georgetown College. (See results below.)

The Kentucky Historical Society sponsors the competition. The students work on projects independently or in groups after choosing a topic based on the year’s theme. For 2009, it’s “Individual in History: Actions & Legacy.”

National History Day is an educational program for students in grades 6-12. Throughout the school year, students conduct research to prepare projects based on an annual theme. They may do individual or group projects in any one of five categories: Paper (individual only), Exhibit, Performance, Documentary and Web site (individual and group combined).

National History Day culminates in a series of contests at the district, state and national levels. This year’s national competition will be June 14-18 at the University of Maryland. For more information, contact state coordinator Kate Hesseldenz at (502) 564-1792, ext. 4477, or e-mail kate.hesseldenz@ky.gov.

Congratulations to all the FCPS participants!
