Paul Laurence Dunbar places 1st in Governor’s Cup

Paul Laurence Dunbar High School picked up the first-place trophy in the 2009 Governor’s Cup state finals, and Henry Clay High School came in third. Winburn Middle School placed second in its division.  

Students from across Kentucky competed March 14-16 in Louisville. Among other top finishers from Fayette County Public Schools:

  • Arts/humanities: 1st Matt Bojanowski, Henry Clay High School; 3rd Dan Richey, Henry Clay High School

  • Mathematics: 1st Vania Ma, Winburn Middle School; 2nd Valerie Sarge, Winburn Middle School; 3rd Jessie Li, Lexington Traditional Magnet School

The Governor’s Cup consists of eight events, including five written assessment exams (math, science, social studies, language arts and arts/humanities); composition or on-demand writing; quick recall, also known as quiz bowl; and future problem-solving.

The Governor’s Cup was founded in 1986 as a way to promote, reward and recognize outstanding academic achievement. It has since become Kentucky’s premier academic event, involving more than 20,000 students, nearly 1,200 schools and thousands of coaches, administrators, parents and community supporters.
