In honor of Constitution Week, the Lexington chapter of the NSDAR has provided Preamble bookmarks for all the school district’s fourth-graders, along with a poster and a pocket-sized U.S. Constitution booklet for each elementary school library.
“The Lexington chapter is hoping that the tradition will be observed … that people are aware of our liberties and will stop to think about what our Constitution means to us,” said Carolyn Wood, chairwoman of Constitution Week activities. “We hope (the donated resources) will encourage the students to read and realize what their liberties are under our Constitution.”
In 1955, the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution petitioned Congress to set aside Sept. 17-23 annually to observe Constitution Week. The resolution was adopted and signed into law in 1956 by President Eisenhower.
For more information about this observance, call Wood at (859) 272-8860 or Sue Tucker, head of the Lexington chapter, at (859) 509-5831.
