Three schools to celebrate history, mark closings

Julia R. Ewan Elementary School, 350 Henry Clay Blvd.
12:30 p.m. Thursday May 15: Students in all grades will perform “99 Years – a Musical Trip through the Decades,” and Principal Vickie E. Burke will speak at the school assembly. Students, staff members and former staffers will get souvenir buttons featuring a picture of the front entryway with the name of the school and the dates 1909-2008.
7 p.m. Thursday May 15: The evening program for the public will follow the same format as the school assembly. In addition, Superintendent Stu Silberman will speak, and the portrait of Mrs. Ewan will be presented to her family. A reception will follow.
1 to 3 p.m. Sunday May 18: Fifth-grade volunteers will take groups of visitors on tours of the building. Memorabilia will be displayed, and light refreshments will be served.

Johnson Elementary School, 123 E. Sixth St.
3-4:30p.m. Sunday May 18: The celebration of Johnson’s history and contributions to the community will feature photos, memorabilia, remarks by former principals and other invited guests, and student performances. A reception will follow.

Linlee Elementary, 2545 Georgetown Road
3 to 5 p.m. Sunday May 18: Linlee’s open house will feature memorabilia, a quilt auction, commemorative cookbook sale and tours. Tickets for food and kids’ activities are $1. Also, cake and punch will be served in the gym. The program, which starts at 4:30 p.m., will include remarks by Principal Sandy Mefford and recognition of past principals and teachers. Superintendent Stu Silberman and board chairman Larry Conner also will speak.
5 to 7 p.m. Thursday May 29: Self-guided tours of the building start at 5 p.m., and performances by the school band and orchestra at 6 p.m. The musical drama “American Pop” will feature the Linlee chorus. Admission is $5, with proceeds benefiting the arts and humanities program. Also, participants may bring dinner or buy dinner from the school for $8 each; call (859) 381-3507 for reservations.
