Surya Green, who just completed eighth grade at Tates Creek Middle School, will represent Kentucky this fall in the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship competition in New York.
Surya, whose concept is a jewelry-making business called SuCari Designs, recently won first-place honors in the statewide NFTE contest.
Surya’s instructors at Tates Creek were Devon Adams and Anisha Beatty-Adams. The state competition was May 31 at Kentucky State University.
In the NFTE program, students learn business concepts, practice such skills as negotiation and pricing, and complete plans for their own individual businesses. NFTE is sponsored by GEAR UP, which is also offered at Crawford and Leestown middle schools.
GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a federal program that helps prepare students to choose the right courses in high school and get ready for college. For more details, see www.fcps.net/gearup/default.htm.
