History buffs advance to state contest

Twenty FCPS middle school students will compete in the National History Day state contest April 26 at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History in Frankfort.
These kids won 1st, 2nd or 3rd place in the North Central District regional competition, held April 12 at Georgetown College. (See results below.)
The students work on projects independently or in groups after choosing a topic based on the year’s theme. For 2008, it’s “conflict and compromise.”
“The kids become little mini experts in their topics and feel good about their success,” said Theresa Buczek, a social studies teacher at Winburn Middle School.
After the regional contest, “they can take the judges’ comments and make changes and hopefully come out even better in the state competition.”
The Kentucky Historical Society (http://history.ky.gov/index.php) sponsors the competition. Congratulations to all the participants!
