Henry Clay High’s Army Junior ROTC took first place in the Cadet Raider Challenge at Western Kentucky University.
The top 14 JROTC high schools from across Kentucky and Tennessee participated in the March 1 competition, which included seven physically and mentally demanding events. At the end, Henry Clay and Fort Knox high schools were tied; it took a modified relay race to decide the winner.
Sgt. 1st Class Brian Hunt and Maj. William Larkin credited their students’ dedication to the JROTC program, noting that they trained two to three hours a day after school to prepare for the competition.
“Our cadets wanted to show the other schools across Kentucky that we have the best Raider team in the state,” Hunt said.
In addition, university President Gary Ransdell recognized two Henry Clay students who have been awarded Army ROTC scholarships to WKU. Justin Powell will receive an $80,000 scholarship for pre-dentistry, and Jasmine Barber will get a $120,000 scholarship for nursing.
