Fayette County Public Schools is looking for a few good men and women. About 350, to be more specific.
The district’s April 12 job fair aims to find strong candidates to fill both certified and classified positions for the 2008-2009 school year.
“FCPS is looking to hire people who have kids’ interests at heart because everything we do is about kids,” said Kiyon Massey, the district’s staff recruiter.
“(The job fair) gives people an opportunity to meet the hiring managers all at one time and gives the principals and hiring managers a chance to see new faces.”
The event, hosted by Tates Creek High School, is open not only to Lexington-area residents but also to anyone and everyone “who understands we’re providing the best environment and best opportunities for our kids.”
Last spring’s inaugural job fair drew more than 500 people from eight states. Melodee Parker, director of Human Resources, expects many more participants this Saturday. “I’m looking for a thousand,” she said.
The district routinely hires teachers, counselors, social workers and administrators as well as bus drivers, warehouse workers and security officers, to name a few.
“We’re going to have a wide variety of things available,” Parker said.
Principals or administrators from each school will have information tables in the Tates Creek cafeteria, and managers from each district department will be in the gym to present classified opportunities.
HR staffers with laptops will be on hand to help candidates apply online; on-site job interviews also are a possibility.
“The people who really make the hiring decisions will be there,” Massey said. “Bring lots of copies of your resume and a good attitude.”
The hiring window for certified positions opens May 19, and principals will offer jobs throughout the summer, with school starting Aug. 13. Applicants also can join the substitute pool and work their way into a permanent teaching slot.
As for classified jobs such as food service workers and clerical staff, the hiring continues year-round as the needs arise.
“The job fair is a wonderful way to connect potential employees with the folks in our district who do the hiring. We hired some great people last year who attended the fair,” Superintendent Stu Silberman said. “Hiring the best people is the most important thing we can do for the future of our kids.”
