Victor Yang, a senior at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, has been selected as one of Kentucky’s two Presidential Scholars for 2008. This designation is one of the nation’s greatest honors for high school students.
The honorees will travel to Washington, D.C., in June for several days of educational, celebratory and fellowship activities.
Dunbar’s Elizabeth Byers and Yang had advanced as semifinalists along with seven other students from across Kentucky. The pair was among 13 candidates from Fayette County Public Schools.
All graduating seniors who are U.S. citizens and have scored exceptionally well on either the SAT or the ACT are automatically considered for participation.
The Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 to honor some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. Each year, as many as 141 students are named Presidential Scholars. For more information, go to www.ed.gov/programs/psp/index.html.
