Several cadets in Bryan Station High School’s AFJROTC program excelled in the annual Kentucky Summer Leadership School, held last week at Union College in Barbourville.

Cadets not only build teamwork but also compete for individual honors. Bryan Station’s Elizabeth Carpenter was selected as the best flight sergeant, and Kelsey Truman as the best squadron commander. Truman also led her squadron to the Commandant’s Trophy. In addition, Bert Lambert and Mickey Stone helped guide their orienteering teams through a rigorous land navigation course, winning first and second place.

Lambert also won the top award for Honor Graduate; distinguished graduates included Breanna Richardson and Truman. Others graduates were Elizabeth Carpenter, Andrew Chadwell, Jared Henderson, Malik Johnson, Lovelea Mitchell, Connor Runyan, Rabrell Simpson, Christopher Staton, Mickey Stone, Gary Sweat, Brittany Thompson, Alex Trujillo, Zachery Workman and Michael Zehender.

Each year, 120 JROTC students from nine high schools throughout Kentucky are selected to attend this intense, comprehensive course. It combines academics, physical fitness and a field training exercise along with leadership challenges to develop character, values, teamwork, management and leadership skills.

All events are graded, and cadets must earn points to graduate. Not all successfully complete the course. Of this year’s 102 graduates, 17 were from Bryan Station.
