Community input is sought for the names of three new elementary schools scheduled to begin construction this spring. Although the new schools – one on the former Bluegrass-Aspendale property, one on Liberty Road, and one near Masterson station – will replace existing buildings, they will be considered new schools and serve different attendance areas.

The Bluegrass-Aspendale school will be a community school in partnership with the Lexington Fayette-Urban County Government, to replace Johnson Elementary School and the now closed Russell Elementary School. The school near Masterson Station will replace Linlee Elementary School. The school on Liberty Road will replace Julia R. Ewan Elementary School.

The district’s naming policy says new schools, facilities and properties may be named for a geographical area of Lexington/Fayette County or prominent deceased person who contributed to the history and/or progress of the Lexington/Fayette County area or nation. Names in use now may be considered.

All recommendations will be forwarded to a Naming Committee for each school, which will make a recommendation to the Superintendent. The Superintendent will then make a recommendation to the Fayette County Board of Education. For the full naming policy, visit the district’s on-line policy manual at http://www.fcps.net/news/feature/070131/5r1.pdf.

Volunteers are also being sought to serve on the naming committees for each school. To volunteer, email your name, address and phone number to naming@fayette.kyschools.us. Please specify which school you’re interested in helping name.

Suggestions of new names for each of the three schools can be made on-line at http://webapps.fcps.net/surveys/newschoolname/ or in writing at 701 East Main Street, Room 108, Lexington, KY 40502. Please include your suggested name for the new school, your rationale for suggesting the name, your name, and your phone number. Don’t forget to say which school your suggestion is for.

Nominations will close March 1.
