Two Fayette County high schools are among the best in the nation, according to the latest edition of Newsweek.

Paul Laurence Dunbar and Henry Clay high schools are included in the magazine’s newest list of America’s Best High Schools. Out of 1,288 schools included in the best of the nation list, Dunbar ranks 710th and Henry Clay ranks 922nd.

Newsweek evaluates the schools by dividing the number of students who took the Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate test by the number of graduating seniors. All public schools that achieved a ratio of at least 1.000, meaning they had as many tests in 2006 as they had graduates, are put on the list, and the 100 schools with the highest ratios are named in the magazine.

In all, 10 of Kentucky’s 231 high schools made it onto Newsweek’s list.  There are roughly 10,700 high schools in the United States.

Dunbar’s ranking this year is up from previous years. In 2006, the school ranked 957th and in 2005, Dunbar was 1,022nd. In 2005, Henry Clay was 450th on the list. The school did not appear in 2006.
