Students at Julia R. Ewan Elementary have spent the last several weeks getting their hands dirty and learning about pottery in the process, thanks to a $1,000 cash award from VSA arts of Kentucky.

The project, entitled “Hooray For Clay” has involved 282 students in the school in learning about the media of clay. The students have explored hand built methods of functional pottery by creating their own pots and learning the history of pottery throughout various cultures.

The money from VSA covered the cost of clay, glazes, pottery tools and texture stamps. VSA arts of Kentucky is a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting arts, education and creative expression for all, with an emphasis on persons with disabilities.

Students in art teacher Jeanne Brownlee’s class will be glazing their fired projects this week. The best times to get pictures or video would be between 7:45 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, Wednesday, April 18, or Thursday, April 19.
