Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent Stu Silberman, who was injured in a bicycling accident on Oct. 8, underwent a second surgery at the University of Kentucky Chandler hospital on Thursday morning. The surgery went as planned and Silberman remains in good condition at UK Chandler Hospital. The hospital released the following information after the procedure:

Silberman underwent a second surgery this morning at UK Chandler Hospital due to his pelvic wound continuing to drain fluid. The procedure-which involved reopening and cleansing the injury site-was performed as a preventative measure and to speed the recovery process. Such procedures are not uncommon with similar orthopedic and soft tissue injuries, said his physician, Dr. William Rosenblum.

Silberman had said on Wednesday evening that his doctors were concerned that the incision from his first surgery was not healing as quickly as they would have liked.

“I appreciate the doctors and the staff at the University of Kentucky monitoring my progress so closely and doing what is needed to ensure a full recovery,” Silberman said.

When Silberman is well enough he is expected to be transferred to Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Center.

Silberman, an avid cyclist, broke his pelvis and collarbone in a bicycling accident on Huffman Mill Pike on October 8. His injuries were more extensive than would be expected from a bike accident, but Silberman was wearing a helmet and suffered no head trauma. He underwent a five hour surgery the day after his wreck.

Mary Browning, the district’s Chief Operating Officer, and Lisa Stone, an Elementary Director with the district, are filling in for the superintendent while he’s in the hospital. Matters needing the attention of the superintendent should be directed to his office. Get well wishes can be sent to Silberman at the hospital or online.
