A student from Southern Middle School took third place in the recent state Kentucky MathCounts competition, which drew 155 other sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders from 59 schools. For his third place win, eighth-grader Michael Druggan was awarded a full-tuition, four-year college scholarship to either the University of Kentucky or the University of Louisville and a trip to the national MathCounts contest May 10-13 in Fort Worth, Texas.

A team of students from Lexington Traditional Magnet School won second place in the state competition and a team from Winburn Middle School earned fourth. In all, the best 27 teams in the state, as determined by regional run-offs, competed. The LTMS team is coached by Betsy Rickenbacker and the Winburn team is coached by Devin Onkst.

Individually, two other Fayette County students finished in the top 20. Fifth place overall went to Michael Bowie of LTMS and 20th place overall went to Lington Sun of Morton Middle.
