Nearly 150 Fayette County Public Schools employees, including Superintendent Stu Silberman, celebrated their retirement at the district’s May 14 dinner and thank-you program.
“It’s very different for me this year because I’m seeing it from a different perspective,” said Silberman, who announced in February that he wouldn’t be back as the schools’ chief. (Read more about his bittersweet emotions in Stu’s News.)
Retirees and their friends, families and supporters enjoyed an evening of fellowship at the Embassy Suites on Newtown Pike as Bryan Station High School’s guitar ensemble provided background music.
This latest group of retirees together logged nearly 3,500 years of service and commitment to schools. Silberman cited continuing improvements in student achievement and narrowing of gaps districtwide, saying, “That doesn’t happen without tremendous work going on in our classrooms.”
The employees in the spotlight worked in every facet of FCPS from classroom instruction, maintenance and logistical support to “It’s About Kids” Support Services and transportation. In honor of their dedication, each received a hardwood cherry rocking chair (provided through donations).
“The kids are the beneficiaries of your service,” Silberman said before individual anecdotes were shared. “There’s 3,497 years of wisdom right in this room.”
The generosity of local businesses and community members made this event possible.
